Increased Electricity Bills in January: Why Are Consumers Paying More?

Due to high January electricity bills, nearly 300 complaints have been received by the electricity distribution company responsible for Southern Bulgaria. Some subscribers are reporting double invoices compared to December.

EVN explains the difference with the lower temperatures and notes that the reporting period includes the holidays when families spend more time at home.

Angel Dimitrov from Plovdiv has filed a complaint, believing that there is no difference in consumption, but is receiving a double bill. He points to a bill of 235 BGN, compared to 155 BGN the previous month.

Even more striking is the difference in his father's bill, who lives alone - from 88 BGN in December to 240 BGN in January.

EVN emphasizes that the topic is relevant every year at this time and the explanation is identical – cold weather and holidays.

Petar Kostadinov, spokesperson for EVN-Bulgaria, commented: “This is the first month of the year with lower temperatures, this is the first month after the Christmas and New Year holidays.”

Before filing a complaint, the company advises comparing the bill with January of the previous year.

“The only factor that affects the higher invoices compared to December is really the cold weather and greater consumption.”, adds Kostadinov.

All complaints received will be checked.
