A 51-year-old man has been arrested over the killing of a businessman in Plovdiv and was charged today.

Police got a call around 1am on September 30 saying a man had been shot at an address in a Plovdiv neighbourhood. Officers identified the victim yesterday, and the suspect was arrested in Sofia.

Investigators say the man has a criminal record and had known the victim for years. They believe the motive was an old grudge and a row over money. The case has been classed as serious premeditated murder.

The Plovdiv district prosecutor's office is overseeing the investigation, while the criminal police run the pre-trial probe. Officers from the Plovdiv regional police directorate, national police headquarters and the state agency for national security worked the case, and investigators have already gathered the first evidence.

At a special briefing today, Vanya Hristeva, head of the Plovdiv district prosecutor's office, presented the investigation along with supervising prosecutor Dimitar Molev, senior commissioner Vasil Kostadinov, head of the Plovdiv regional police directorate, and officers from the Plovdiv national security directorate.

Investigators say the probe is still going on. Over the weekend, prosecutors will ask a court to order the toughest measure available: pre-trial detention.
