Reservoirs in Bulgaria at the end of March: Water volume is 20% higher than last year

As of March 30, 2026, the sum of the available impounded volumes in complex and significant reservoirs is 4888.7 million cubic meters. This represents 74.80% of their total volume and is approximately 20% more than the volume as of March 2025. This is reported by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) on its website.

The percentage of these reservoirs is the highest in the last seven years in terms of the values recorded for the same calendar period, they specified. The MoEW manages the water resources in 52 significant and complex reservoirs.

The reservoirs “Kamchia“, “Yasna Polyana“, “Asenovets“ and “Pchelina“ are 100% full, and the reservoirs “Strechka bara“, “Hristo Smirnenski“, “Borovitsa“, “Studena“, “Domlyan“, “Alexander Stamboliyski“, “Krichim“ and “Ivaylovgrad“ are over 90% full.

With the arrival of spring and the expected flood, if necessary, the companies managing the complex and significant reservoirs take measures to ensure free volumes by pre-emptive discharge of water masses in order to absorb the increased inflow and maintain levels within optimal limits, the MoEW adds.

According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), rainfall will continue until the end of this week, with significant amounts on the night of Wednesday to Thursday in Southern Bulgaria and mountainous regions. At the end of the week, there will be more significant temporary cloud breaks and rainfall in fewer places, the MoEW also reported.

On March 30, river levels in most of the river basins will be decreasing, and as a result of runoff, there will be increases in the lower reaches of the main rivers. On April 1 and 2, as a result of the rainfall, increases in river levels are expected. Water quantities will be below the warning thresholds, the ministry said.

The MoEW reminds local authorities to apply the planned measures in the Flood Risk Management Plans 2022 - 2027 and to follow the current hydrometeorological information and forecasts for dangerous phenomena published on the official website of the ministry.

During the night, cloud cover over most of the country will be significant and in some places, mainly in the eastern half, there will be rainfall, the NIMH reported.
