Weather on August 26: cooling down, thunderstorms inland and calm sea

On August 26, the weather in the country will be dynamic. A cooler atmospheric front will move from west to east, bringing variable and often significant cloudiness, short-term rain, and thunderstorms. Along the Black Sea coast, conditions will be more favorable for the beach, although the wind will turn from the west-northwest in the afternoon. NIMH warns of more intense phenomena in mountainous areas and in parts of Western and Southern Bulgaria.

Weather in Burgas and the region

In Burgas and along the Southern Black Sea coast, the day will begin mostly sunny. In the afternoon hours, cloudiness will increase temporarily, but the probability of precipitation remains low. Expected maximum temperatures will be around 27-29 degrees, and the morning will be relatively pleasant.

The sea water temperature near Burgas will be around 25-26 degrees. The wind before noon will be from the east-southeast, and later it will turn from the west-northwest. It is expected to be up to moderate, with an estimated speed of around 20-35 km/h. The sea state will be around 3 degrees (on the Douglas sea scale).

Preliminary swimming assessment: yellow flag. The sea water will be warm, but the moderate wind and waves may create less suitable conditions for small children, inexperienced swimmers, and people with inflatable equipment. The final decision on the flag is made by the lifeguards at the specific beach.

Sofia and Sofia region

In Sofia and the region, variable and often significant cloudiness is expected. There will be short-term rain and thunderstorms in places, with the possibility of more intense storms. Maximum temperatures will be approximately between 29 and 31 degrees, and a cooling sensation will be felt after the passage of the rain zones.

The wind will be oriented from the west-northwest and will be moderate, temporarily strong, with gusts around 35-50 km/h. The probability of precipitation is high, especially in the afternoon. A swimming flag assessment does not apply to Sofia, as the city is not a seaside resort.

Western and Eastern Bulgaria

In Western Bulgaria, cloudiness will be more often significant. Short-term, locally intense rain, thunderstorms, and conditions for hail are expected. Temperatures will reach between 29 and 34 degrees, but with the intrusion of cooler air, they will begin to drop. The wind will be moderate to strong from the west-northwest, and the probability of rain is high.

In Eastern Bulgaria, the morning will be sunnier and warmer. Later, cloudiness will increase, and short-term rain and thunderstorms are possible in places inland. Maximum temperatures will be mostly between 30 and 34 degrees. The wind will initially be from the eastern quarter, then it will turn from the west-northwest and be moderate.

For the sea regions of Eastern Bulgaria, the water temperature will be between 25 and 26 degrees. The expected sea state of around 3 degrees suggests a yellow flag as a preliminary assessment for beaches exposed to stronger waves. At sheltered beaches, conditions may remain better, but the instructions of the lifeguards should be followed.

Weather in the mountains

In the mountains, the weather will be unstable. Cloudiness will be variable, often significant, and short-term rain and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. In the Balkan Mountains and the Rila-Rhodope region, there are conditions for the rainfall to be temporarily intense and significant in quantity.

At 1200 meters, the maximum temperature will be around 23 degrees, and at 2000 meters – around 17 degrees. The wind will be moderate to strong from the west-northwest. Tourists should plan their hikes in the early hours, avoid open ridges during thunderstorm activity, and monitor the development of the clouds. A beach flag assessment does not apply to mountain areas.

Along the Black Sea coast

Sunny weather will prevail along the Black Sea coast. In the afternoon, cloudiness will increase temporarily, but precipitation is unlikely. Maximum temperatures will be between 27 and 29 degrees, and the sea water will remain pleasant for swimming – around 25-26 degrees.

Before noon, the wind will be from the east-southeast, and by the end of the day, it will turn from the west-northwest. It is expected to be up to moderate, with the sea state reaching around 3 degrees. The preliminary assessment for swimming conditions is a yellow flag – it is suitable for experienced swimmers with increased caution, but one should not go far out when the wind strengthens or a warning flag is set by the lifeguards.
