An air ambulance flew 11 times between 2 and 9 October to take seriously ill patients to hospitals with specialist care, the national 112 emergency system directorate at the Interior Ministry said.
The 112 number took 35,534 calls that week. Of these, 13,558 went to emergency medical centres and another 5,980 were passed on to local councils.
The calls broke down as follows: 2,270 about road crashes, 3,647 about fires, 244 about accidents and breakdowns, 10 about disasters, 10 about home and industrial incidents, and 3 about hazardous substances. Callers reported 7,848 crimes against people and 1,031 crimes against property. Another 25 calls were about reckless driving and street racing, 276 about missing people or people in distress, and 9 about illegal migrants or refugees.
11 calls came from abroad. In Croatia, the Netherlands and Germany, callers needed police, fire crews and ambulances. One call reported domestic violence against a Bulgarian woman in the Belgian city of Ghent.
The HEMS air ambulance service has operated since 2024. By the end of September it had flown 370 missions. In 285 of them, it moved a patient from one hospital to another. These are known as secondary missions. In 85, the crew picked up the patient at the scene and took them to a hospital with the right level of care. These are primary missions.
HEMS says it most often flies patients with severe injuries and heart and blood vessel problems. It also carries people with polytrauma, meaning several serious injuries at once. Others have multiple organ failure, where several organs stop working normally. The most common causes are road crashes, falls from a height and workplace accidents.
