Tragedy in Sunny Beach: Experts call for more severe charges against Nikola Burgazliev after mother's death

SOFIA - Experts and legal analysts are calling for a reclassification of the charges against Nikola Burgazliev, the son of a police officer, after one of the victims of the serious incident in Sunny Beach died. The tragedy, which shocked the country in mid-August, took the life of 35-year-old Hristina, the mother of four-year-old Marti, who continues to fight for his life in a Sofia hospital with serious injuries. The woman's death has sparked a new wave of public outrage and questioned the adequacy of the initial investigation.

On Nova TV, lawyer Iliya Todorov from the Association of Victims of Accidents, expressed his categorical opinion that the charges against Burgazliev should be changed.

"The charges against Nikola Burgazliev should be reclassified to a more severe one. Namely, causing death and other seriously injured victims"

he said, emphasizing that even the possible absence of evidence for marijuana use would not change the legal classification of the act. According to the new legislative provisions, such crimes carry penalties of 10 to 15 years of imprisonment, and in "particularly serious cases" the sentence can reach between 15 and 20 years.

Meanwhile, Rumen Dunev from the Association "Road Safety Auto-Technical Experts" shed light on the technical characteristics of the vehicle. According to his data, the machine driven by Burgazliev was not actually an ATV, but a buggy.

"ATVs are a different type of machine"

he explained, adding that there are serious doubts about the registration of the vehicle. According to Dunev, the buggy was registered with less power than its real power.

"My personal opinion is that it was registered with a lower power so it could be driven with an AM category license"

the expert pointed out. The AM category allows drivers who have passed a theoretical exam to drive machines with a power of up to 4 kW from the age of 16. This fact raises questions about potential violations during registration and affects the regulatory framework related to road safety.

The tragic incident occurred when Burgazliev, with his buggy, ran over three children and three adults, among whom was the deceased Hristina, in the Sunny Beach resort complex. The incident caused a wide public outcry, and the scenes of the tragedy shocked hundreds of eyewitnesses. The incident raises serious questions about the state of road safety in the country and about possible privileges enjoyed by sons of law enforcement officials. The public is anxiously following the development of the investigation, awaiting justice for the victims and their families.
