Gloomy August on the Southern Black Sea Coast: Incidents at sea increase, two brothers save a drowning man

With the beginning of August, the Bulgarian Black Sea coast traditionally attracts thousands of tourists, but this period also hides its greatest dangers. According to experts, it is during the last summer month that rip currents and strong undertows pose a serious threat even to the most experienced swimmers. Unfortunately, the data shows a worrying trend – the increased number of incidents on the Southern Black Sea Coast in recent days, many of which end tragically.

Amid these grim news, a case in Nessebar recalled that human vigilance and quick reaction can turn the tide of events. Thanks to the efforts of two brothers, Borislav and Viktor Baychevi, a man was saved from certain death. The incident took place on the beach, where two middle-aged men ignored the warnings about the dangerous state of the sea and went into the water.

Shortly after, the strong current dragged them inwards. One of the men managed to escape from the grip of the waves, but the other continued to fight for his life, drowning.

Seeing the critical situation, the Baychevi brothers acted instantly.

"My brother and I took the reel. We instructed some of the tourists who came to help. And we managed to pull him out. There is always a current near the breakwater", said one of the rescuers.
The two emphasized that rip currents can put even the best swimmers at risk.

In an attempt to explain the reasons for the increased incidents, senior lifeguard from Sunny Beach, Mitko Kolev, spoke to "The Day Begins".

"At this time of year, the sea is much more dangerous than in June and July because the so-called northeastern winds come out. The sea reaches 4-5 Bft waves and creates currents from which it is very difficult for tourists to get out", he explained, emphasizing the specifics of the meteorological conditions in August.

Kolev advises that if you get caught in such a current, the most important thing is to signal the lifeguards immediately. Their knowledge and equipment are crucial for saving human lives in such extreme situations.
