Changing the Time: Why an Unnoticed Step Could Prove Historic

Today, March 29, 2026, it's already light outside our windows, although a little earlier than it would have been yesterday. At three o'clock in the morning, the clocks abruptly jumped forward by an hour. And just like every year, this action raises questions. Why do we do it? And perhaps more importantly – for how long?

The European Union and the Eternal Dilemma

The introduction of daylight saving time is due to Directive 2000/84/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council from January 2001. There's a feeling of something routine, something that just happens, but have you ever wondered why? Why is this time change so persistent?

Interestingly, in 2018, a proposal appeared to stop these periodic changes. Will it happen? This is a question that hangs in the air, awaiting an answer. The truth is, there is still no final decision.

When Will the Situation Change?

In order to change the situation, the countries of the European Union must make a joint decision. They must reach a consensus on which time zone to choose permanently. This means agreeing on a common standard, something that seems easy, but in reality is more complex than it appears.

Meanwhile, some countries have already taken steps in this direction. Turkey, Russia, and Peru are just some of the countries that have decided to abandon the time change. What's the reason? Are they tired of this practice, or are there other reasons that we can only guess at?

Back to Standard Time

Daylight saving time will be in effect until October 24th. Then, on the night of October 25, 2026, we will return to astronomical time. The clocks will go back one hour. Again.

Will this routine continue forever? Or maybe this is the last time we'll have to set our clocks? Time will tell.
