Sofia prosecutors are looking into a video that shows a young man screaming at and threatening his 101-year-old grandfather. The man works as a judge at Sofia district court.

The Social Assistance Agency reported the case as domestic violence to the interior ministry's special unit. Sofia district court told BNT it has also ordered an internal check into the judge.

The video was filmed a few days ago in a flat in Sofia, where the old man lives in one room while his grandson's family takes up the rest of the home. Along with the threats, the clip catches a loud crash of objects being thrown. Once it spread on social media, angry reactions poured in. BNT did not air the footage showing the verbal abuse.

In the recording, the grandson says: "You won't have lunch here anymore! No lunch! Breakfast and dinner. If I see you at lunch, I'll throw everything out, plates, dishes, all of it, off the balcony. All of it."

The row started over where to sit at the kitchen table. The grandfather, an engineer, told BNT he usually cooks and eats there alone, but a few days ago he broke from his routine, which angered his grandson. The old man says he had already finished lunch by the time his grandson came in.

He says his grandson has never hit him and apologized afterward. The young man was on edge that day, he says, but does not shout at him all the time — they talk and help each other.

"How would he hit me? He doesn't even come near me. He shouts. Then he apologized," he told BNT.

Police from the Sofia directorate have already spoken to the old man. He told them he has no complaints against anyone in the family and will not file a report.

After many people raised questions, Sofia city court said the man had served there as a junior judge until July 1.

The grandson declined to meet BNT's team.
