Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman: Gasoline Versions Will Survive

The sports car market is experiencing upheaval, and Porsche is among the manufacturers adapting to the new reality. Following a significant drop in Boxster and Cayman sales in Europe during the first half of 2025 – a 56% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, reaching only 2277 units sold according to Jato Dynamics data – the German manufacturer announced a change in its plans for the next generation of its iconic models.

Change in plans for the 718 Boxster and Cayman

Initially, it was expected that the next generation of the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, announced back in 2022, would be fully electric. However, according to the British publication Autocar, Porsche has undertaken a strategic restructuring that dramatically affects this concept. The new plan provides for both models – the roadster and the coupe – to be offered with both gasoline engines and electric drive systems. The parallel production of both versions is a key element of the new strategy.

Autocar adds that this change is a consequence of a phone call between Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche, and investors. During the conversation, it became clear that the company would focus on modernizing its ICE engines used in the Cayenne and Panamera models, as well as plug-in hybrid systems. The goal is to ensure the functionality of these technologies at least until 2030.

This decision shows an increased focus on ICE, unlike previous declarations of a complete transition to electricity. The delay in the development of electric SUV models also affects the parent company Volkswagen.

The electric Cayenne and Macan

Despite the change in plans for the 718 Boxster and Cayman, Porsche confirms that the electric version of the Cayenne remains in effect. It will be based on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform with an 800-volt architecture and is expected to debut at the end of the year. Interestingly, the electric car will be produced in parallel with the third-generation gasoline Cayenne, a period of several years.

Unlike the expected decrease in sales of the Boxster and Cayman, sales of the second generation of the all-electric Macan are developing successfully. In the first half of 2025, 16,343 units of the model were sold in Europe, an increase of 29% compared to January-June 2024. This further highlights the complexity of the transition to electric vehicles in the automotive sector and the unpredictability of market trends. Apparently, Porsche is trying to find an optimal balance between environmental and market requirements.
