Five people died when the lower three floors of a seven-storey building collapsed on Dogu Street in the Cevizli area of Istanbul's Maltepe district, the Istanbul governor's office said. Rescuers pulled three more bodies from the rubble and ended the search.
"Search and rescue work at the collapse site ... ended after the lifeless body of our last fellow citizen was reached at 6.15am," the governor's office said in an official statement. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
Firefighters, medics, police and rescuers went to the scene after the alert. Teams led people out of the upper floors. In the first hours they pulled out two dead and 10 injured, including three children. Since the operation began, 14 people in all have been taken from the rubble.
The dead are aged 5, 20, 22, 40 and 66. Four died at the scene and one died in hospital. Their bodies were taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute morgue for autopsy.
As a precaution, officials evacuated three neighbouring buildings, with 55 people in total. No. 12 has five flats and one business, with 13 people. No. 25 has five flats and one business, with 12 people. No. 27 has 10 flats and four businesses, with 30 people.
The disaster shelter team put 44 people who have nowhere to live in hotels. The disaster psychosocial support team is working with them and with those being treated in hospital. The disaster catering team is feeding rescuers and people at the scene from a mobile catering vehicle, a response vehicle and a logistics vehicle.
In all, 774 people, 237 vehicles, two drones and 10 dogs took part in the operation. The fire service, AFAD teams from Istanbul, Tekirdag, Bursa and Sakarya, the 112 emergency service and police worked at the scene. The provincial directorate for environment, urbanisation and climate change, Kizilay (the Red Crescent) and the road agency were also there, along with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the provincial directorate for social services and Maltepe municipality.
The governor's office said teams are still clearing the rubble.
