Traffic Police: Over 7600 Drivers Caught Drunk Behind the Wheel Since the Start of the Year

From January 1st to October 13th, during Road Police checks, over 7600 cases of drivers who had consumed alcohol were identified, and over 2400 cases of drug use were found, reports BNR.

During the latest police operation, no cases of alcohol or drug use were found among bus drivers. The Confederation of Bus Carriers explains that before starting a journey, a pre-trip technical inspection of the vehicles is carried out, as well as a pre-trip medical examination of the drivers.

One of the main focuses during Road Police checks is the use of alcohol and drugs by drivers, says Chief Inspector Lachezar Bliznakov from the "Road Police" at the General Directorate "National Police".

"From January 1st to October 13th of this year, the cases we have found for alcohol use are over 7600; those for narcotic substances are over 2400 for the same period.

The good thing is that we do not find [alcohol and drugs] in bus drivers; I can even confidently say that the established cases are much fewer. There are many negative consequences, but the most serious are the lives and health of the people who are endangered by these actions."

Magdalena Miltenova from the Confederation of Bus Carriers explained about road safety. Before starting a journey, a pre-trip technical inspection of the vehicles is carried out, as well as a pre-trip medical examination of the drivers.

"Every day before the trip, a pre-trip technical inspection of the vehicle itself is carried out. Corresponding checks for alcohol are carried out on the drivers who are working on the respective day."

The seizure of vehicles as a punitive measure continues, and it is yielding results, said Chief Inspector Lachezar Bliznakov.

"You know that such checks are carried out throughout the country. They are a major focus in the control activity performed by police officers. Even with the slightest suspicion of alcohol and drug use, drivers are tested accordingly. Let's not get into a vehicle after using alcohol and narcotic substances. I very, very conscientiously appeal to this."
