Prosecutors in Haskovo have charged a 58-year-old lorry driver from Bosnia and Herzegovina with trying to smuggle 12.630 kg of cocaine into Turkey through the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing, the prosecutor's office said.

The man was detained on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, during a check by officers of the organised crime directorate (GDBOP) and the Customs Agency. He was driving a tractor unit with a trailer heading for Turkey.

Officers found a black bag on the upper bunk in the cab. It held 12 packages wrapped in white paper tape and filled with a white powder. A field drug test showed cocaine. The weight given is gross. The packages have been seized.

The driver is charged with trying to take a high-risk drug across the border without a permit, under Article 242, Part 2, read with Article 18, Part 1 of the Criminal Code. Prosecutors say the crime was not completed for reasons beyond the driver's control.

The supervising prosecutor ordered the man held for up to 72 hours. Prosecutors have asked the court to keep him in custody.
