Neurosurgeon Dr Svetoslav Todorov presented an analysis at the annual congress of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), University Hospital Burgas said. It was the only Burgas hospital with a scientific paper at the event.

Todorov, who holds a doctorate in medicine, showed an electronic poster titled "Analysis of neurosurgical care in the Republic of Bulgaria and its distribution by region". The work is part of his dissertation. His scientific supervisor is Prof Dr Yavor Enchev, a doctor of medical sciences.

The study looks at how neurosurgical care is organised in Bulgaria, how easy it is for patients to get and how well it works. It compares the system with models in Europe. Among the problems, the author names a lack of staff and an uneven spread of care across the country. He also points to technical and organisational obstacles, and to rules that affect how well neurosurgery units work.

One section deals with Burgas. Charts compare the number of neurosurgical operations in Bulgaria and in the region, and the work of the hospitals that offer this care. The neurosurgery unit at University Hospital Burgas ranks first among them.

Hospitals from Sofia and Varna also took part in the scientific programme. The EANS congress is held every year in a different European city and draws more than 2,000 neurosurgeons from Europe and around the world.

The hospital says its part in the congress recognises the growth of its team and the hospital's place in modern Bulgarian neurosurgery. It calls the congress the biggest and most important event in the educational and scientific programme of EANS. Experienced specialists and young neurosurgeons from leading university and clinical centres share research results, new treatments and good practice there.
