What does the BNB coinage program for 2027 provide for?

The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has officially announced its plans for 2027. The program includes the issuance of two commemorative and five collector coins, which mark significant historical and cultural events.

"The BNB has carried out all its actions in the process in full compliance with legal and procedural requirements," emphasized Governor Dimitar Radev.

Key issues in 2027:

  • January: Silver coin "St. Tsar Petar I" (10 euros).
  • April: Silver coin "150 years of the Bulgarian Opalchenie" (10 euros).
  • May: Two commemorative coins (2 euros) – "20 years of Bulgaria in the EU" and "Oil-bearing Rose".
  • August: Copper coin "125 years since the birth of Angel Karaliychev" (5 euros).
  • September: Gold coin "Holy Martyrs Faith, Hope and Love and their mother Sophia" (100 euros).
  • November: Silver coin "Revival Period Fountains" (10 euros).

Why is there a debate about the coin designs?

In 2026, a controversy arose regarding the design of the commemorative coin dedicated to the Bulgarian alphabet due to an objection from a Eurozone country. The BNB clarified that the issue is not within the competence of the Eurosystem and is outside the coordination procedures of the ECB, but rather a governmental matter coordinated by the European Commission.

It is important to note the difference: the 2-euro commemorative coins are legal tender throughout the Eurozone, while collector coins are only legal tender within the territory of Bulgaria.
