Customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing found 912.45 grams of gold jewellery hidden under the lining of a vest worn by a passenger on a bus from Turkey. An appraisal put the value at 100,369.60 euros, the Customs Agency said.
The bus, registered in Turkey and carrying 23 passengers, reached the crossing at around 00:30 on 2 October, travelling from Turkey through Bulgaria to Romania. The driver is Turkish. A risk check flagged the bus for a thorough search, and officers noticed an odd bulge in the vest of one passenger, a Romanian woman.
A body search found 20 plastic bags sewn under the lining, holding items made of yellow metal. An expert confirmed they were gold rings, pendants, chains, earrings and bracelets.
A customs investigator has opened a pre-trial case, now supervised by the Haskovo district prosecutor's office. The Customs Agency posted footage of the find on its YouTube channel.
