NASA's space agency through its GOLD (Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk) mission made a sensational discovery in the ionosphere - the region between 80 and 640 km above the Earth. Instead of the expected calm conditions, the scientists recorded mysterious X-shaped structures, which were previously thought to occur only during powerful solar storms.
This unexpected observation, described in the prestigious scientific journal "Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics", questions the existing models of the atmosphere and the influence of solar activity. The discovery is of great importance for satellite communication and GPS navigation, as these X-structures can affect the charged particle layers.
