Official statistics reveal an unprecedented scale of police actions in the fight against drug-related crimes. The specialized interagency unit documented a total of 869 newly initiated pre-trial proceedings related to narcotic substances for the period from the first to the thirty-first of May.
Large-scale police operations included 489 targeted interventions, during which 851 suspects were detained. Experts seized an impressive 236 kilograms of marijuana and managed to uncover nine laboratories for producing prohibited substances.
A notable example of a successful operation was the case in Svishtov, where officers discovered a Romanian citizen with two sacks of dry plant matter weighing around fifteen kilograms. During the inspection, five bottles with various narcotic substances were found, including heroin, methamphetamine, and amphetamine. Fifteen bags of cannabis were seized from the foreigner's vehicle.
Parallel to anti-drug actions, the interagency unit conducted large-scale operations against illegal migration. 375 specialized operations were carried out, during which 56 foreigners with unauthorized stay on the territory of Bulgaria were detained.
Law enforcement authorities initiated 44 new pre-trial proceedings for illegal migration, related to specific articles of the Criminal Code. A total of 102 people were detained for illegally crossing the state border.
Judicial statistics confirm the effectiveness of the taken measures - 341 judicial acts for drug-related crimes and 78 sentences related to illegal border crossing have entered into force.
The joint unit created in August 2023 between the Ministry of Interior and the Prosecution continues to be a key instrument in the fight against organized crime, with its main goal being detailed monitoring and investigation of specific criminal activities.
