The Crisis in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Pernik: A Rescue Plan with Midwives from Kyustendil

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the Pernik Hospital "Rahila Angelova" has resumed its activities after a one-month interruption, which was caused by an acute shortage of medical specialists. The key strategy for overcoming the staffing crisis includes temporarily seconding midwives from the hospital in Kyustendil.

Executive Director Dr. Yavor Drenski confirmed that the institution has taken urgent measures to ensure continuous medical care. "At the moment, we are working on a temporary solution with colleagues from another medical facility, but our ultimate goal is to hire midwives on a full-time contract," he said.

Four experienced specialists from Kyustendil, including Silvia Ivanova with an impressive 33 years of professional experience, are taking shifts at the Pernik department. "We decided to voluntarily support our colleagues by combining our workplaces," Ivanova shared during her first 24-hour shift.

Senior Midwife Desislava Asenova shared more details about the new team: "We have prepared a full schedule until the end of the month. Our age range is extremely diverse - from young specialists with 20 years of experience to colleagues over 70 years old".

Among the first patients who welcome the department's restoration with enthusiasm is Anna Mircheva - a future mother in her seventh month of pregnancy. "I want to give birth right here, with my doctor," she is adamant.

It is indicative that just a week after resuming activities, the hospital has already registered its first baby. The management continues to actively seek a permanent solution for filling the staff positions, while maintaining parallel communication with "Maychin Dom" for potential additional support.
