NRA employees face court over corruption scheme

Two employees of the National Revenue Agency (NRA) were detained in the resort town of Chernomorets following a report of soliciting and receiving a bribe. The inspectors have been charged with committing a crime under Art. 301, para. 1 of the Penal Code.

The case is a heavy blow to the image of the revenue agency at the height of the summer season.

The report against the employees was filed on July 18 by the owner of a mini-market. The merchant stated that during a routine inspection, the inspectors identified violations but offered to issue an act for only one of them in exchange for the sum of 300 euros.

Institutional actions:

  • Prosecutor's Office: The supervising prosecutor has imposed a 72-hour detention, and a request for "remand in custody" is forthcoming.
  • NRA: The agency's management confirmed that one employee is from Burgas and the other was deployed from Plovdiv. Both have been temporarily suspended from their duties while an internal investigation is underway.

The investigation continues, with law enforcement authorities checking whether the employees participated in similar schemes at other commercial establishments along the Black Sea coast.
