More than 2 tons of marijuana went up in flames today, September 24, 2026, at a thermal power plant — the way police got rid of drugs seized along the border with Turkey.

More than 80% of the marijuana was meant to reach the Turkish market but never made it. Most of it was caught at the Kapitan Andreevo and Lesovo border checkpoints, with the rest seized further inside the country.

In total, 2.1 tons of marijuana were burned, tied to 28 criminal cases. Some of the cases have already been closed. For the rest, the court ordered most of the drugs destroyed right away, even while the cases are still open. Only samples of the marijuana will be kept as evidence.
