Is a radical change in parliament necessary?

Vice President Iliana Iotova stated to journalists in Pazardzhik that it is high time for a comprehensive reform in the way the National Assembly (NA) functions. According to her, the current working model needs an update that shifts the focus to real debate and legislative oversight.

When we move towards such a reform, there are many forces that are against it and want things to stay the same, noted the Vice President.

Main priorities for an effective parliament:

  • Restoring trust: Years of low ratings require radical measures for transparency.
  • Parliamentary oversight: The NA must be a place for genuine debate and informed decision-making, rather than formalities.
  • New rules of procedure: The proposed changes discussed by the ad hoc committee are a step in the right direction, according to the head of state.

Iotova emphasized that she supports "bolder actions" in the process of drafting the new rules of procedure, as she believes that guarantees for high-quality dialogue are key to the functioning of a parliamentary republic.
