Bioinformatician Petar Ivanov Joins Genome Center in Burgas

Bioinformatics specialist Petar Ivanov will participate in the development of a Genome Center - a laboratory in Burgas, within the framework of the large-scale scientific project of the Center for Excellence "UNITE". This was announced by Prof. Dr. Stanislav Simeonov from the Burgas Free University (BFU) "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov" to journalists at a press conference at the BTA national press club in Burgas.

Ivanov graduated from the University of Zurich and has remarkable experience in the field of algorithms, system software, and is doing a dissertation in bioinformatics, which receives exceptional reviews, explained Prof. Simeonov.

The project for the creation of a Genome Center based in Burgas will assist the hospitals in the city, he noted. According to him, the goal is to build a strong scientific core in the field of bioinformatics and applied sciences in Burgas, which will contribute to the development of medicine and scientific research in the region. 

The initiative is part of the "UNITE" project, which unites five universities in the country. The coordinator is Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", and among the partners, besides BFU, are also the Technical University - Sofia, Shumen University "Bishop Konstantin Preslavski" and Ruse University "Angel Kanchev". At the beginning of the year, the Burgas Free University "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov" announced the construction of a Genome Center - a bioinformatics laboratory within the framework of the Center for Excellence "UNITE". The new structure will be located at the university and will work with technologies for sequencing and analysis of genetic data. The laboratory's team includes established scientists, and its activity is aimed at developing algorithms and methods for processing biological information.
