A Bentley hit two workers of the state road maintenance company Avtomagistrali at the 27km mark of the Trakia motorway towards Sofia while they were securing the scene of an earlier crash. One died at the scene. The other is in hospital in an extremely serious condition.
The first crash was a minor collision between two cars. To fill in a joint accident report, the drivers pulled into the emergency lane and moved to the ditch behind the guardrail.
A police team and the two Avtomagistrali workers came to the scene. They put out cones to secure the area and then went back to the emergency lane.
At about 2:30pm the Bentley, which was travelling at high speed, ploughed into the stopped cars and hit the two men.
All three cars caught fire.
Three people were rushed to hospital. Blood samples were taken from them to test for alcohol and drugs. Pre-trial proceedings have been opened.
The stretch is known for many road accidents. All required signs are in place, and the speed limit is 90 km/h when the road is wet or when it rains.
Two more crashes happened on the Trakia motorway later in the day.
