Bulgaria has joined the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the 2026-2030 term. Our country received record-breaking support for its active contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage.

Bulgaria achieved a significant international success at UNESCO

Bulgaria has been elected as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2026–2030 period. The decision was made with a large majority during the 11th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention in Paris.

Our country received the highest number of votes among the candidates in its regional group, which is a recognition of our active role in the organization.

Why is this important for Bulgaria?

  • Long-standing experience: Bulgaria plays an active role in UNESCO, with a Category 2 Regional Centre under the auspices of the organization operating on our territory.
  • Anniversaries: The election coincides with the 70th anniversary of our UNESCO membership, 25 years since the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, and 20 years since the ratification of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • Diplomatic success: The Minister of Culture, Nayden Todorov (noting the official source context), emphasized our country's commitment to being a constructive partner in the Committee's work.

During his visit to Paris, Minister Miloshev met with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay (noting the official source context), extending an official invitation on behalf of Prime Minister Rumen Radev to visit Bulgaria on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of our accession to the global organization.
