Bulgaria: Population Declines in 2024, According to NSI

The population of Bulgaria records new data on demographic processes over the past year, according to the new edition of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) "Population and Demographic Processes 2024", announced on the institution's official Facebook profile.

According to the latest data, as of December 31, 2024, the country's population amounts to 6,437,360 people. This represents a decrease compared to the previous year. The decrease is 8,121 people, or 0.13 percent, compared to the data reported for 2023. Men represent 3,095,140 people, or 48.1 percent of the total population, while women are 3,342,220, or 51.9 percent. Statistics show that there are 1080 women per 1000 men. It is interesting to note that men predominate in the age groups up to and including 55 years of age. However, as age increases, the proportion of women in the total population increases.

We remind you that as of December 31, 2023, the population of Bulgaria was 6,445,481 people. The comparison with the data from 2022 shows a decrease of 2,229 people, or 0.03 percent, according to the NSI report.

During the past year, 53,428 live births were registered in the country. Children up to 15 years old are 901,843, which represents 14 percent of the total population.

Regarding mortality, the number of deaths in 2024 is 100,736.

The data also reports the distribution of the population by settlements. 4,744,111 people live in cities, or 73.7 percent of the population, while 1,693,249 people live in villages, which represents 26.3 percent of the country's population. Vidin region turns out to be the smallest in population, with 70,542 people, while Sofia region (capital) is the largest, with 1,295,931 people.
