By the end of June, the total assets of pension funds in Bulgaria reached 17.254 billion euros. According to official data from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), published on the central bank's website, this figure marks a significant increase of 2.480 billion euros, or 16.8 percent year-on-year, compared to the 14.774 billion euros reported at the end of June 2025. At the same time, compared to the close of the first quarter of this year, when assets amounted to 16.091 billion euros, there was an increase of 1.162 billion euros, corresponding to 7.2 percent.

Debt securities dominate the portfolio structure, rising by 629.3 million euros (6.7 percent) year-on-year to reach 9.989 billion euros. Their relative share in the total volume of assets at the end of June was 57.9 percent, a change from the 63.4 percent reported during the same quarter of 2025. The remaining instruments are distributed as follows:

  • Shares and other equity instruments, excluding investment funds and money market funds, increased by 880.5 million euros (37.8 percent) to 3.209 billion euros. Their share at the end of the second quarter was 18.6 percent, compared to 15.8 percent a year earlier.
  • Investments in shares and units of investment funds and money market funds saw growth of 1.012 billion euros (52.8 percent) to 2.931 billion euros. Their relative share reached 17 percent, compared to 13 percent at the end of June 2025.
  • Cash and deposits increased by 12 million euros (1.5 percent) to 837.6 million euros, with their share at 4.9 percent, compared to 5.6 percent a year ago.

The geographical structure of assets reveals the following trends:

  • Assets invested in Bulgaria grew by 435.1 million euros (9.2 percent) to 5.168 billion euros (from 4.733 billion euros in June 2025), representing 30 percent of the total volume, compared to 32 percent last year.
  • Funds held by other euro area residents increased by 1.102 billion euros (21.1 percent) to 6.336 billion euros (up from 5.234 billion euros last year), accounting for a share of 36.7 percent, compared to 35.4 percent in the same period of 2025.
  • Investments in other countries and international organizations rose by 752 million euros (27.6 percent) to 3.481 billion euros, with a relative share of 20.2 percent, up from 18.5 percent at the end of June 2025.

Pension rights are the predominant element in the liabilities of pension funds, with a value amounting to 17.176 billion euros. This indicator shows a year-on-year growth of 2.469 billion euros (16.8 percent) compared to 14.707 billion euros in June 2025, as well as an increase of 1.153 billion euros (7.2 percent) compared to the end of the first quarter of 2026, when they were 16.023 billion euros. Their relative share in total liabilities is 99.5 percent, remaining unchanged from the end of the second quarter of 2025.
