On August 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., the Regional Historical Museum – Burgas invites you to a special culinary demonstration. In the cozy atmosphere of the Ethno-Kitchen, we will reveal the secrets of preparing a traditional lamb kurban soup at home.

Kurban is more than just a dish – it is a symbol of health, ancestral memory, and gratitude, deeply rooted in Bulgarian culture.

Why is the kurban important for the Dormition of the Mother of God?

Despite its pagan roots, in the Bulgarian tradition, the kurban occupies a central place in the celebration of major Christian holidays, especially the Dormition of the Mother of God. On August 15, after the end of the Dormition Fast, the people honor the Mother of God with many rituals:

• Blessing of ritual breads and fruits in the church.
• Offering flowers before the icon of the Holy Mother of God.
• Incensing the festive table.

What does the festive table include?

The table must include fresh pita bread, boiled wheat, corn, chicken porridge, pumpkin, watermelon, grapes, and honey – as the Mother of God is the patron saint of bees. Lamb meat is the basis of the ritual kurban, which is distributed for the health of relatives, godparents, and neighbors.
