Created in 1995, this natural park stands out as the most extensive protected territory in Bulgaria, covering over 1% of the national territory. The park possesses an impressive network of five reserves, including "Silkosia" – the oldest, dating from 1931, and the internationally recognized biosphere reserve "Uzunbodzhak", officially included in the UNESCO list.
Forest areas dominate the landscape, with nearly 80% of the territory covered by dense forests, with over one-third being virgin ecosystems with centuries-old beech and oak trees. Scientific research reveals exceptional biological wealth – 64 relict plant species, of which seven are unique to the European continent.
The ecological system of Strandzha belongs to the Euxinian-Colchic forest region and represents a true biological reserve. Ornithological studies document the presence of about 270 bird species, including rare representatives such as the black stork and various birds of prey. The faunistic diversity includes an impressive 400 vertebrate species and over 600 invertebrate organism species.
The geographical location of the park covers transitional climatic zones – from mountainous terrains to coastal landscapes, which creates extremely diverse biotopes. Besides natural landmarks, the area preserves rich intangible cultural heritage, including authentic settlements and traditional nestinarstvo, recognized by UNESCO as a globally significant intangible cultural heritage.
