"Veleka" Park in the Izgrev residential district in Burgas is a modern neighborhood park with playgrounds, a skate zone, cycling paths, and cafes, which is gradually becoming one of the most visited green spaces outside the Sea Garden.

"Veleka" Park in Burgas is an example of how vacant inter-neighborhood land can be transformed into a modern urban oasis that enriches an entire district and brings together children, young people, active individuals, and seniors. Located in the Izgrev residential district and serving the Zornitsa and Slaveykov districts as well, it is gradually becoming the second most important city park after the Sea Garden – but with a clearly defined neighborhood, "everyday" character.

Where is "Veleka" Park located and who does it serve

The park is situated in the northern part of Burgas – between the high-density Izgrev district, Dimitar Dimov Boulevard, and the main transport arteries leading out of the city. Several tens of thousands of people from Zornitsa and Slaveykov live within walking distance, making it a natural place for daily walks and exercise.

There is direct access to "Veleka" via public transport – bus lines serving Dimitar Dimov Boulevard and the Izgrev Terminal stop just a few minutes' walk from the park. This allows it to be used not only by locals but also as an alternative to the Sea Garden for people from other parts of the city who are looking for a quieter green space closer to home.

From an inter-block field to a structured city park

Before the park was designed, the site was a typical 80s and 90s inter-block area – with sporadically planted trees, unformed paths, and cars parked on the grassy areas. Gradually, through phased projects by the Municipality of Burgas, the site was transformed into a structured park with alleys, lighting, and children's and sports zones.

A key moment was the construction of the main pedestrian and bicycle paths, which "connected" the separate areas into a unified system. Today, the park is clearly separated from street traffic, is mostly illuminated, and allows for safe movement both during the day and in the evening.

Playgrounds and an area for the little ones

One of the strengths of "Veleka" Park is its well-developed children's infrastructure. Several playgrounds for different age groups have been built within the park – from small children with swings, sandboxes, and low slides, to older children with climbing frames, rope equipment, and combined modules.

The surfaces are mostly shock-absorbing (rubber or specially treated fine gravel), which reduces the risk of injury. Many of the facilities are located near benches and shaded areas, allowing parents to watch their children in comfortable conditions. During the warmer months, the playgrounds often become the liveliest places in the park.

Skate zone, sports, and active recreation

"Veleka" Park is also establishing itself as a place for youth activities. A skate zone has been set up in the park, where children and teenagers ride skateboards, scooters, and rollerblades. Similar facilities were missing in many neighborhoods until a few years ago, and here they are a natural center for meetings and informal "competitions".

The alleys in the park are suitable for running, cycling, and rollerblading. In some sections, street fitness equipment has been installed – parallel bars, pull-up bars, and other elements for bodyweight training. This makes the park an attractive destination not only for families with children but also for people looking for an affordable opportunity to exercise outdoors without a gym subscription.

Cafes, amenities, and "neighborhood sociality"

Small businesses have gradually appeared on the periphery and around the entrances of the park – cafes, bistros, and ice cream carts. They contribute to the "social" character of the space: many people come not just for a walk, but to have a coffee, meet friends, or wait for their children while they play.

The presence of eateries and street trade also brings challenges – noise, waste, and the need for more frequent cleaning. Currently, the park is maintained regularly by municipal services, but the high usage during the summer season clearly shows how important good organization and controlled commercial activity are to avoid compromising the quality of the environment.

Greenery, tree species, and shaded areas

Although "Veleka" Park is relatively young compared to the Sea Garden, it already offers a significant amount of greenery. In addition to the tall trees inherited from the past (poplars, plane trees, lindens), new decorative species and shrubs have been planted in recent years, forming alleys and "green corridors" toward the residential blocks.

The shaded areas around the playgrounds and seating spots are especially important – they turn the park into a real alternative to the beach and the Sea Garden on hot days when not everyone has the opportunity to get to the sea. At the same time, the presence of open grass areas allows for picnics, children's play, yoga, and other outdoor activities.

Transport access and connection with the rest of the urban fabric

The park is well-situated in relation to public transport – nearby are stops for several bus lines that connect "Veleka" with the center, the train station, and other key points in Burgas. This makes it relatively easily accessible even for people who do not live in the immediate area.

At the same time, for cyclists and pedestrians, the park serves as a convenient "connection" between the neighborhoods and the Sea Garden – via "Dimitar Dimov" Boulevard and the adjacent alleys. Thus, "Veleka" is not an isolated green island, but part of a wider network of recreational spaces in the city.

Social role: the "backyard" of the northern districts

For the residents of "Zornitsa" and "Izgrev", "Veleka" Park plays the role of an extended "backyard" – a place for a morning coffee, an evening walk with the dog, meetings of teenagers, and children's games after school. Thus, it is not just a landscaped area, but a space where neighborhood communities are built and maintained.

It is precisely this everyday use that distinguishes the park from classic tourist sites: people don't come here just for "sightseeing," but for living – for habits, routines, and small rituals that shape the quality of urban life.

Challenges and development potential

The growing popularity of "Veleka" Park also brings challenges. During peak hours, the playgrounds and the skate zone become crowded, which increases the risk of accidents and wear and tear on the equipment. Evening noise sometimes becomes a problem for those living in the immediate vicinity.

At the same time, the park has potential for further development – for example, the construction of additional shaded spaces, more sports facilities, better lighting in some sections, and clearer separation of zones for small children, teenagers, and quiet relaxation. If these steps are implemented carefully, "Veleka" Park could become a model for a modern neighborhood green zone, which many other Bulgarian cities are still seeking.
