"St. Trinity" Park in the Burgas residential complex "Slaveykov" is one of the most illustrative examples of urban environment transformation in recent decades. Situated on the grounds of the old city cemetery, today it covers about 146 decares of green space and has become an important "green lung" for the residents of "Slaveykov" and the neighboring "Zornitsa" residential complex.
From necropolis to city park: history of the site
Until about the 1960s, the old Burgas cemetery was located on the current site of "St. Trinity" Park. With the expansion of the city and the construction of the new "Slaveykov" residential complex, the function of the area gradually changed – burials were moved to new necropolises, and the zone remained as a semi-abandoned space between the new blocks.
Over time, the old "Slaveykov" neighborhood park took shape here – with separate alleys, trees, and the iconic "Horseman" monument. Later, the park received the name "St. Trinity," and with the construction and renovation of the temple of the same name, the place gradually began to be perceived as a combined spiritual and recreational hub.
Location and scope: 146 decares of green territory
"St. Trinity" Park is located in the central part of the "Slaveykov" residential complex – between residential blocks, main boulevards, and new facilities such as the "Park Arena OZK" swimming complex and the commercial areas towards Mall Galleria. The area of the park is approximately 146 decares, which ranks it among the larger city green spaces outside the Sea Garden.
The park primarily serves the residents of "Slaveykov," but due to its proximity to "Zornitsa" and good transport connectivity with the rest of Burgas, it is also used by residents of other neighborhoods. Nearby, there are public transport stops, schools, kindergartens, and sports facilities, which further increase the flow of visitors.
Renovation 2022–2023: new alleys, lighting, and recreational areas
In 2022–2023, the Municipality of Burgas implemented a large-scale stage of the improvement of "St. Trinity" Park. Special attention was paid to the area next to the "Park Arena OZK" swimming complex, where old, worn-out pavements and lighting fixtures were replaced, and the green areas were organized and landscaped.
Pedestrian paths were built and renovated, new park lighting was installed, and areas for seating and recreation were laid out. The goal is for the park to become safer, more functional, and more attractive both during the day and in the evening. The municipality is planning a next stage of renovation towards "Struga" Blvd., which would gradually cover the entire territory.
Playgrounds and neighborhood play spaces
"St. Trinity" Park is important for families with children in "Slaveykov." In various parts of the park, there are playgrounds with swings, slides, and combined play equipment. Although some of them are older and in need of renovation, in recent years, surfaces and equipment have been gradually replaced.
The playgrounds are located at a reasonable distance from busy streets, which creates a greater sense of security. Nearby, there are benches and shaded areas where parents can watch their children. The park often becomes a natural stage for neighborhood gatherings, children's parties, and informal meetings between neighbors.
Sports and active recreation: development potential
Unlike some newer parks, "St. Trinity" does not yet have highly specialized sports infrastructure such as large skate parks or modern fitness zones, but it offers space for running, walking, cycling, and outdoor games. Wide alleys and lawns allow for improvised workouts and activities.
The proximity to the "Park Arena OZK" swimming complex and sports bases in the area makes the park a logical place for warm-ups, relaxing after training, and walking for those who exercise. In the future, the park has the potential to be supplemented with more street fitness equipment or marked running and walking routes.
"St. Trinity" Temple: a spiritual center in the heart of the park
A special role in the park is played by the renovated "St. Trinity" temple, located in the area towards the "Slaveykov" residential complex. The temple is not just a religious building, but also a visual focal point and landmark in the park – with a landscaped surrounding area, alleys, and seating.
In recent years, the building has been renovated, and the area around it has been landscaped, which attracts both worshipers and people looking for a quieter and more peaceful place for a walk or reflection. On holidays and during major Christian celebrations, the area around the temple comes alive with services and gatherings.
"The Horseman" monument and the memory of the place
One of the most recognizable symbols of the park is "The Horseman" monument – a bronze sculpture that rises in the so-called "old park" in the "Slaveykov" complex, today part of "St. Trinity." The monument is well known to several generations of Burgas residents and often serves as a popular meeting point.
The monument reminds us of the early stages of the complex's development and the period in which the area was gradually changing from a peripheral necropolis into part of the modern city. As a visual and emotional marker, "The Horseman" gives identity to the park and distinguishes it from other green spaces in Burgas.
Greenery, shade, and urban ecology
Although for many years the park was not maintained at the level of the Sea Garden, today "St. Trinity" possesses rich tree vegetation – old trees with thick trunks, wide crowns, and well-formed shaded "corridors" along the alleys. This makes the park a natural protection from summer heat for the residents of the densely built-up "Slaveykov."
The green areas also contribute to improving the urban microclimate – reducing dust, noise, and the "urban heat island" effect. Additional flower gardens, ornamental shrubs, and maintained lawns are gradually being added, especially in the renovated sections near "Park Arena OZK."
Transport accessibility and connections with the rest of the city
"St. Trinity" Park is easily accessible by public transport – in the immediate vicinity, there are stops for several bus lines, including along the main directions of "Struga" Blvd. and the internal routes in the complex. This facilitates visits from people who do not live in "Slaveykov" but are looking for an alternative to the more crowded central zones.
Pedestrian and bicycle connections to "Zornitsa," Mall Galleria, sports facilities, and other parts of the neighborhood turn the park into a kind of "hub" of neighborhood mobility – a place that connects residential, commercial, sports, and spiritual spaces.
Social role and challenges
For the residents of "Slaveykov," "St. Trinity" Park is much more than a green space – it is an informal center of neighborhood life. Here, different generations meet: children playing; students walking on their way to sports halls; elderly people walking or sitting on a bench; families spending the afternoon outdoors.
With its growing popularity, however, the challenges also increase – the need for constant maintenance, stricter control over cleanliness, regulation of noise, and unauthorized trade. Future stages of renovation will be decisive for whether "St. Trinity" will establish itself as a good example of a modern neighborhood park or remain a place with uneven environmental quality.
Perspectives: "St. Trinity" as a model for urban renewal
The transformation of "St. Trinity" Park – from an old cemetery and abandoned site into an active city park with a temple, a monument, renovated alleys, and a strong neighborhood function – shows what results can be achieved with consistent investment and clear planning.

If the overall improvement plan is completed and sustainable maintenance practices are introduced, the park can become a model for the renewal of similar spaces in other Bulgarian cities – proof that even the most crowded neighborhoods can have their own "green anchor" that provides air, meaning, and a place for people to meet.
