The leading European low-cost airline "Ryanair" officially announced the expansion of its presence in Bulgaria by introducing a new air route from Plovdiv Airport to Milan, which will launch in October this year.

During a special press conference at the Plovdiv municipal administration, details about the strategic partnership were presented. The event was attended by Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov, representatives of the municipal leadership, and Alicia Wojcik-Golebowska - Communications Director for Central and Eastern Europe.

Mayor Dimitrov emphasized the significance of the new collaboration, highlighting the potential benefits for regional development. "This initiative will stimulate tourist flow, expand opportunities for cultural exchange, and support domestic tourism," he said.

The Ryanair representative shared the company's large-scale plans. Currently, the carrier serves 37 countries, has over 2,333 airports, and more than 90 operational bases. The company transports around 260 million passengers annually, and after the pandemic period, it reports a 35% increase in passenger flow.

Wojcik-Golebowska revealed the company's ambitious strategic goal - to reach 300 million annual passengers by 2034. In the context of the Bulgarian market, Ryanair is present at four airports, plans to serve over 3 million passengers, and provide jobs for more than 2,000 people.

From Plovdiv Airport, four international routes will be active during the upcoming winter season - to London, Manchester, Birmingham, and the new destination Milan. The airport and municipal management are already planning to expand the route network, with an additional line expected to be introduced in 2026, possibly to Spain.

The strategic partnership between the local administration and the Irish air carrier is emerging as a significant catalyst for the economic development of Plovdiv and the region.
