The Uzunbudjak Biosphere Reserve, also known as Lopushna, stands as a benchmark for nature conservation in the Strandzha Mountain. Officially declared in the distant year 1956, it received international recognition from UNESCO in 1977 through the "Man and the Biosphere" program.
Geographically positioned between the villages of Kosti and Slivarovo, in close proximity to the Turkish border, the reserve covers a territory with extremely rich biological heritage. Its distinctive characteristic is the centuries-old forests, some of which exceed two hundred years of age, and the specific mild, humid climate typical of the Strandzha region.
The ecosystem shelters hundreds of plant and animal species, among which rare relict representatives stand out. The Strandzha oak, laurel cherry, and pontine crazy tree are just part of the unique flora that makes this reserve a true natural museum.
Access to Uzunbudjak is extremely strictly regulated - only scientific and educational visits are permitted under a special permit regime. This conservative management aims to maximize the protection of exceptional biological diversity and preserve natural processes.
For the Bulgarian nature conservation community, Uzunbudjak is not just a reserve, but a symbol of national efforts to preserve unique ecosystems and biological heritage.
