Yellow code and storms on June 24: rain, thunder, and increased caution at sea near Burgas

Weather in Burgas and the region

On June 24, the weather in Burgas and the region will be unstable, with a typical summer but more dynamic character. During the day there will be variable cloudiness, and by and after noon, cumulus-rain clouds are expected to develop, creating conditions for brief, locally intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Local hail is also possible in the interior of the region.

The maximum air temperature will be around 26–28°C, and the minimum morning values – around 18–20°C. In the hours without rain, it will be warm and stuffy.

The probability of rain and thunderstorms in the area is increased – about 60–70%, especially in the afternoon and evening. Stronger wind gusts and temporarily reduced visibility are possible during the storms.

The sea water temperature near Burgas will remain around 22–23°C. The sea state will be more noticeable compared to previous days – level 2, at times up to 3, is expected, especially when the wind picks up.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate from the east-northeast, with strengthening during thunderstorms. The average speed will be around 4–7 m/s, but during a storm, gusts can temporarily exceed 10–12 m/s.

Preliminary assessment of swimming safety along the coast near Burgas: yellow flag – swimming is possible, but with increased caution due to stronger waves, possible undercurrents, and sudden weather deterioration during approaching storms. Entering the sea during thunderstorm activity is not recommended.

Sofia and the region

In Sofia and the surrounding area, the weather on June 24 will be unstable. From the morning there will be broken clouds, but around and after noon, brief, locally intense showers with thunderstorms are expected. NIMH has announced a yellow code for dangerous phenomena for the capital and the region, with a warning for possible local flooding and hail.

Maximum temperatures will be around 25–27°C, and minimums – around 15–17°C. The wind will be light to moderate, but can strengthen temporarily during storms. Traffic difficulties are possible due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.

Eastern and Western Bulgaria

In Western Bulgaria (Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Sofia-city and region, Pernik, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad, etc.), the weather on June 24 will be highly unstable. NIMH warns of brief, but temporarily intense rainfall with thunderstorms, as well as a risk of hail. In some areas, rainfall amounts can be significant for a short time, with a risk of local flooding in low-lying areas and ravines.

Maximum temperatures in Western Bulgaria will vary around 24–27°C, and minimums – around 14–17°C. The wind will be light to moderate, with temporary strengthening as storm cells pass.

In Eastern Bulgaria (Ruse, Razgrad, Silistra, Shumen, Targovishte, Varna, Burgas, etc.), unstable conditions are also expected, with a yellow code for dangerous phenomena in effect for some of the regions, mainly in the northeastern and central parts. During the day there will be variable cloudiness, and in the afternoon thunderstorms and rain will develop in many places.

Maximum temperatures in the eastern part will be between 26 and 29°C, with minimums around 17–20°C. The wind will be light to moderate, with strengthening in the Danubian Plain and by the sea during storms.

In the mountains

Mountain regions on June 24 will be among the most high-risk in terms of storms. From the noon hours, powerful cumulus-rain clouds will develop in the massifs of Western and Central Bulgaria, with brief but intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and conditions for hail. Strong wind gusts are also possible along the ridges.

Temperatures at 1200–1500 m will be around 15–18°C, and on the highest peaks – around 8–12°C. Mountain hikes should be planned carefully, with an early start and the aim to avoid high parts in the afternoon. During thunderstorm activity, staying on open ridges and peaks is dangerous.

Black Sea Coast

On the Black Sea coast, the weather will be more unstable than typical for summer. During the day there will be variable cloudiness, with more sun in the morning hours and increasing cloudiness in the afternoon. In some places, especially along the northern and central coast, brief showers and thunderstorms are possible.

Air temperatures along the coast will be around 25–28°C, with minimums around 18–20°C. The sea water temperature will be between 21 and 23°C, with values on the southern coast in the upper end of the range.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate, mainly from the eastern quarter, with speeds around 4–7 m/s, but as storm cells pass, brief, stronger gusts are possible. The sea state will be 2–3 on the scale.
