Weather on June 23: a sunny and warm day, pleasant sea and good conditions for the beach

On "June 23" Bulgaria remains in summer mode with plenty of sun, high daytime temperatures, and only isolated short-term afternoon showers. Along the Black Sea coast, including the Burgas area, mostly sunny weather is expected, with a light breeze and a pleasant sea water temperature – a combination that creates very good conditions for the beach and seaside vacations.

Weather in Burgas and the region

In the Burgas area, the day will start clear and relatively cool, with minimum temperatures of around 18–20°C in the early morning hours. In the afternoon, thermometers will rise to about 26–28°C, with the feeling being that of a typical early summer day – warm, but not extremely hot. The forecast from the NIMH and short-term models indicate mostly sunny weather with scattered cloudiness, with no significant rainfall expected.

The probability of rain in Burgas itself and along the coast of the region remains low – around 0–10%. If any short showers form, they will be more likely in the interior of the region and near the Balkan Mountains, rather than over the beaches themselves. Visibility will be very good throughout most of the day.

The sea water temperature near Burgas on June 23 will be around 22–23°C, and in the sheltered Burgas Bay, it is usually half a degree to a degree higher compared to the more open areas to the north. This provides comfortable conditions for swimming even for people who are more sensitive to cooler water.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate. In the morning hours, it will be quite light, and in the afternoon it will strengthen to about 4–6 m/s, most often from the east-southeast or east-northeast. Gusts along the open beaches may temporarily reach 7–8 m/s, but without creating serious risks for swimming. The sea state will be low – about 1–2 points on the Douglas scale.

Given the combination of warm air, pleasant sea water temperature, light to moderate wind, and low probability of precipitation, the preliminary safety assessment for swimming at the beaches in Burgas and the region on June 23 is a green flag. Conditions are favorable for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports, although it is recommended to follow the instructions of lifeguards and pay attention to the high UV index during the noon hours.

Weather conditions in the country

1. Sofia and region

In Sofia and the surrounding areas, "June 23" will be a typical summer day. Minimum temperatures in the morning will range around 16–18°C, and maximums during the day will reach 27–30°C. Sunny weather with good visibility will prevail until noon. In the afternoon, especially over the mountains west and south of the capital, cumulus clouds will develop.

The probability of short-term afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms in the region is moderate – about 30–40%, being higher in the mountainous parts than in the city itself. The wind will be light, mostly from the west-northwest or southwest, with speeds of about 2–4 m/s. On a hot afternoon, it is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors without sun protection.

2. Eastern and Western Bulgaria

In Western Bulgaria (Northwest, Southwest, and the central western parts), the weather will be hot with daytime maximum temperatures between 28 and 32°C. The mornings will be clear, but in the afternoon hours, cumulus-rain clouds will develop in many places, especially over the mountains and around them. The probability of short-term intense showers and thunderstorms is about 40–50% in the southern and some of the eastern regions.

In Eastern Bulgaria (Central North, Northeast, and Southeast Bulgaria, excluding the coast), temperatures will remain summery – between 29 and 33°C. There, however, the weather will be more stable, with a lower probability of afternoon showers – around 20–30%, and they will be more local and short-lived. The wind in the interior will be light to moderate from the east-southeast, with speeds around 3–5 m/s.

In the interior of the country, although there is no sea water for swimming, attention is drawn to safety when using reservoirs and rivers – the water in them can be cooler and hide risks, even when the air is hot.

3. Weather in the mountains

The mountain regions of Bulgaria will offer a cooler and more refreshing option for June 23. At about 1200 m altitude, maximum temperatures will be around 18–21°C, and at about 2000 m – around 12–14°C. The morning will be mostly sunny with good visibility, creating suitable conditions for early hikes.

In the afternoon hours, however, it is likely that cumulus-rain clouds will develop, with an increased risk of short, but intense showers and thunderstorms – the probability is about 50–60%, especially over the Rila, Pirin, Balkan Mountains, and parts of the Rhodopes. The wind in the high parts will be moderate, from the west-northwest, with speeds of about 5–8 m/s, with gusts up to 10–12 m/s on the ridges. Swimming in mountain lakes is not recommended due to the low water temperature and health risks.

4. Black Sea coast

Along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, "June 23" will be a mostly sunny and pleasant day. In the northern part (the region of Varna, Balchik, Kavarna, Shabla), daytime maximum temperatures of around 25–27°C are expected, and morning minimums of around 17–19°C. In the southern part, including the areas of Burgas, Nessebar, Sozopol, Primorsko, and Tsarevo, maximum temperatures will reach 26–29°C, with minimums between 18 and 20°C.

The sea water temperature along the coast is around 21–23°C in the northern resorts and around 22–23°C in the southern ones, with a slight warming compared to previous days. The sea state remains low – about 1–2 points, which is favorable for swimming and water sports. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate from the east-southeast or east-northeast, with speeds of about 4–7 m/s, with possible slightly stronger gusts in the afternoon.

The probability of precipitation along the Black Sea coast is low – around 10–20%, with possible short showers being more likely in the interior than over the beaches themselves. Given the forecast, the preliminary assessment for swimming conditions along the Black Sea coast is predominantly a green flag, with possible short periods of a yellow flag in case of stronger winds or local intensification of the waves.

Tourists and local residents are encouraged to use sunscreen, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the noon hours, and follow the instructions of lifeguards and the flag signals on the beaches.
