Key priorities for road safety in Bulgaria

Improving road safety is a leading priority for the state, said the Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev during a roundtable at the National Assembly. The discussion, organized by "Democratic Bulgaria," focused on risk assessment and the effective management of public resources.

"We must not work in a piecemeal fashion, but systematically," Minister Peev stated firmly regarding the current approach of the institutions.

The problem with the fragmented system

According to the Minister of Transport, the biggest challenge is the fragmentation of the administration. Currently, numerous agencies and municipalities are working on separate parts of the system without having a unified database for prevention.

  • Data and statistics: It is necessary to work with real figures that serve as a basis for adequate measures.
  • Prevention over punishment: Peev emphasized that the focus is primarily on sanctions, while comprehensive preventive actions remain in the background.
  • Bipartisan consensus: The topic of road safety should be a unifying one, rather than a tool for political debates.

The Minister called for intensive work during the month of August, with all proposals to be discussed with civil organizations and expert associations to ensure the transparency and effectiveness of the steps taken.
