The Memory of Thrace: Wisdom, Not Hatred

The history of Thrace must be a source of wisdom and lessons, not a tool for fueling enmity and hatred. This was stated by Svetlana Mitosheva of "Progressive Bulgaria" in a declaration from the parliamentary rostrum, dedicated to the anniversary of the devastation of the Thracian Bulgarians in 1913.

"Historical moments have no party color or political decoration; they are a symbol of our nation's growth," Mitosheva emphasized.

The Forgotten Tragedy in Textbooks

Although the majority of Bulgarians know about the capture of Adrianople, few are familiar with the scale of the tragedy that followed. According to Mitosheva, these events remain alive mainly in the memory of descendants and in scientific works, but still do not occupy their rightful place in the educational system.

The "Ilieva Niva" Memorial – A Symbol of Dignity

  • In 1996, a memorial complex was built near the village of Gulovo, Ivaylovgrad Municipality.
  • The monument honors thousands of refugees, burned villages, and 200 innocent children who perished on these lands.
  • In June 2026, the 30th anniversary of the complex's establishment was marked.
