The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria strongly condemns the brutal attack on the St. Elijah Church in Damascus, carried out on June 22, 2025. This terrorist act took the lives of dozens of civilians, including children, and wounded many others. Such a direct attack on religious freedom and the security of the Christian community in Syria and the region represents an unacceptable act of violence and extremism.
The Bulgarian government expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured and affected. It insists on immediate action by the transitional Syrian authorities and the international community to prosecute those responsible for this criminal act and ensure the security of all religious minorities in the country.
Bulgaria supports the efforts of the European Union to strengthen coordinated measures against all forms of religious violence and extremism that attempt to undermine peace and interfaith relations in the region. The government will continue to work to protect the rights and freedoms of all faiths and to promote tolerance and understanding at the international level.
