Prof. Dr. Ivan Kochev, a prominent Bulgarian linguist specialized in the field of dialectology, phonology and Balkan linguistics, was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of Pomorie" in 2011. Kochev worked at the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences until 1995, leading the Section for Bulgarian Dialectology and Linguistic Geography and serving as deputy director of the institute from 1978 to 1988. He was also deputy director of the Macedonian Scientific Institute from 1990 to 2008.
On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Prof. Kochev's birth, an International Scientific Conference on the topic "The Literary Language and Dialects - Historical and Contemporary Aspects" will be held in his hometown of Pomorie. The forum will offer developments that are of interest not only to specialists, but also to the general public interested in the development of the Bulgarian language.
The conference program includes a plenary session with reports by prominent Bulgarian and foreign scholars, as well as panel sessions dedicated to various aspects of Bulgarian dialectology, lexicography, etymology and onomastics. Among the topics, the peculiarities of Bulgarian dialects in different regions, the influence of Slavic and non-Slavic languages on the Bulgarian vocabulary, as well as the historical development of the Bulgarian language and its dialects will be discussed.
