Sofia or Burgas: host of 'Eurovision 2027' to be decided today

It is expected to be announced today which Bulgarian city will be chosen to host the 'Eurovision 2027' song contest. Sofia and Burgas reached the final stage of the procedure, after Varna and Plovdiv were eliminated in the first round of evaluation.

The bids of the four cities were analyzed by an international committee with the participation of representatives of the Bulgarian National Television, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), as well as external experts. Among the key criteria were the technical parameters and infrastructure of the proposed venues, as well as their compliance with EBU requirements and the contest's television production standards.

Following the elimination of Varna and Plovdiv, Eurovision director Martin Österdahl (Martin Green) expressed gratitude to both cities for their interest and efforts.

"I thank Plovdiv and Varna for their dedication to the Eurovision Song Contest and for their ambition to host an event that unites millions of people around the world through the power of music," Green stated. He also emphasized the significant economic and social benefits that hosting such a forum brings.

According to him, both Sofia and Burgas present strong bids.

"We hope both cities will be an active part of the national events related to 'Eurovision 2027' in May next year," he added.

The capital relies on its well-developed hotel base, international transport connectivity, the presence of an airport, and its accumulated experience in organizing large-scale events. Mayor Vasil Terziev also pointed out the capacity of the venue proposed for hosting the contest as a serious advantage.

For its part, Burgas emphasizes its modern infrastructure, strong tourism potential, and the opportunity for the event to be held outside the capital. Mayor Dimitar Nikolov has already clearly stated the city's desire to be the host.

The choice between the two cities represents the final stage of the host selection procedure.

Bulgaria to host 'Eurovision' for the first time

Our country won the right to organize the 71st edition of the contest after DARA triumphed at 'Eurovision 2026' in Vienna with the song 'Bangaranga'. This is Bulgaria's first victory in the history of the competition. The artist collected a total of 516 points, topping both the jury ranking and the public vote.

The victory guarantees that in May 2027, Bulgaria will host the largest musical television contest in the world.

It is expected that the final decision between Sofia and Burgas will kick off preparations for one of the most significant international events held in our country.
