Transport Minister Georgi Peev is planning the creation of a single road traffic control body and stricter rules for young drivers following meetings with the families of road accident victims.

A New Approach to Road Safety in Bulgaria

Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev has initiated key reforms to reduce road trauma, placing an emphasis on dialogue with the parents of children killed in accidents. The main goal is to eliminate fragmented control and introduce effective preventive measures.

"This fragmented control on the road must be changed. The control authorities must work as a single body," stated Minister Peev.

Key Reform Measures:

  • Unified control system: Unifying the actions of the Ministry of Interior, the Executive Agency "Automobile Administration," the Road Infrastructure Agency (API), and the Toll Management for real-time monitoring.
  • Integrated monitoring: Monitoring not only for speed, but also for dangerous maneuvers, overloaded trucks, and aggressive driving.
  • Training of new drivers: Eliminating fictitious training and introducing safe driving centers with simulations of risk situations.
  • Restrictions for beginners: The introduction of a "provisional license" for drivers with up to 2 years of experience is being discussed, including a ban on night driving and restrictions on vehicle power.

The state is ambitious to impose a new model of behavior on the road, starting from education and family upbringing, with specific legislative measures expected to be presented by the end of August.
