Footage from the weekend protests in Los Angeles shows a group of masked participants surrounding and burning American flags while chanting anti-Trump slogans. The situation escalated as the police declared an "unlawful assembly" and used stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

Over the weekend in Los Angeles, footage was shot showing protesters burning and spitting on American flags while chanting anti-Trump slogans. The video reveals a group of dozens of people, many wearing masks, surrounding and burning an American flag on the ground. Some of them even spit on the flag or pour flammable liquid to keep the fire going before adding a second flag to the blaze.

Many of the protesters are holding up flags of South American countries like Mexico while the American flag burns on the ground. They also chant "F-Trump".

The footage from the weekend unrest also shows Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office personnel intervening to disperse the crowd by firing stun grenades. The Los Angeles Police Department declared an "unlawful assembly" on Sunday evening after the protesters refused to leave the city center.

President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard over the weekend after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials were attacked on the streets of Los Angeles during operations to apprehend and deport illegal immigrants. Seeing that neither California Governor Gavin Newsom nor Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass took sufficiently aggressive action to stop the attacks, Trump signed a presidential memorandum to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to "deal with the unrest that has been allowed to spread," the White House said in a statement.

Newsom immediately objected, though the unrest continued to escalate. "I have formally requested the Trump Administration to withdraw the illegal deployment of troops to Los Angeles County and return them under my control," Newsom wrote in a post on the social network X, attaching his letter to President Trump. "We had no problem until Trump intervened. This is a serious violation of state sovereignty - inflaming tensions while draining resources from where they're truly needed."
