Pomorie Municipality has received approval from the Ministry of Agriculture to assume management of the emblematic Thracian Dome Tomb, located within the city limits. This important news was announced to BTA by Mayor Ivan Alexiev, emphasizing the key moment for the future of the cultural and historical site. According to the mayor, the decision is a result of a meeting with the ministry's team and represents a crucial step in the ambitious plan to include the tomb in the UNESCO World Cultural and Intangible Heritage List.
"We already have the green light and are working towards the Thracian Dome Tomb being handed over for management to Pomorie Municipality, so that we can apply at a later stage", Alexiev stated, underlining the significance of the measures taken. The city, known for its picturesque landscape and rich history, has long strived to promote its cultural heritage.
Pomorie's ambitions go beyond simply preserving history. The city aims to establish itself as a leading tourist and SPA destination on the Southern Black Sea coast, as Mayor Alexiev emphasized at the end of May this year. This statement was made during the discussion "Brand Pomorie. SPA capital of the Southern Black Sea coast", part of the national campaign "The Wonders of Bulgaria", organized by "Standard".
The Pomorie Tomb, a site of national importance, declared a cultural and historical heritage in 1978, is currently in the assets of the Experimental Station for Southern Cultures, part of the Agricultural Academy. According to Mayor Alexiev, the current situation creates significant obstacles for the local authorities to apply for national and European projects for the development and socialization of the site. The coastal municipality has already taken action to obtain the right of management, and a project has been prepared to promote the tomb as a tourist attraction.

Time has stopped at the entrance to this landmark. The Thracian Tomb, dating from the 2nd-3rd century, reveals the grandeur of bygone eras. It is a large circular room with an impressive diameter of about 12 meters, in the center of which rises a thick hollow column. Access to this treasure of the past is provided through a long corridor that transports visitors to another time. According to archaeologists, the facility served as a mausoleum for a wealthy Anhialian Thracian family, a place for religious rituals dedicated to the cult of the sun. The ancient dome tomb is among the largest found in Bulgaria, and unique in its kind on the Balkan Peninsula, representing a combination of a typical Thracian dome tomb and a Roman mausoleum.
