Black Sea Cleanup: Nessebar

For the third consecutive year, Nesebar Municipality, in cooperation with a team of volunteer divers, undertook the ambitious task of cleaning the waters around the Old Town of debris resulting from human activity.

This initiative, conducted in the context of Earth Day and the World Coastal Cleanup Day, has become a tradition, invariably taking place at the end of summer.

The action covered a significant part of the water area. Divers dived into the waters around the Northern Port of Nesebar, explored the small pier near the Fisherman"s Monument, cleaned the fishing port near the fortress wall, as well as the water area of the beach near the breakwater.

The scene was lively: special equipment was seen being prepared for deeper sections, while the team worked methodically, starting from the shallow waters.

Divers removed a variety of plastic waste, but also coped with larger items, such as car tires and household items, which had turned the seabed into a makeshift landfill.

The main goal of this initiative, besides the obvious physical cleaning, is to focus public attention on the need to protect the marine ecosystem. In addition, the campaign provides a valuable opportunity to monitor the state of the water area by comparing the results from the three years of the project. The official conclusions are that the coastal waters are significantly cleaner than before.

"This way we will not only ensure cleanliness for ourselves, but we will also give the Black Sea inhabitants the opportunity to expand their habitats and develop in a normal environment. Every year, new participants join the cause " a testament to the fact that good example is contagious, and concern for the sea unites us. Because when we keep the water clean, we keep the future clean,"

shared one of the volunteers, emphasizing the ecological impulse of the project.

The participants do not stop here and are already discussing expanding the scope of the campaign for next year. The idea is to explore and clean the nearby bays, improving the ecological condition of a wider area, important both for local residents and tourists. This clearly shows the will for sustainable development and concern for the future of the Black Sea.
