2024 Budget: What did the MPs decide?

Members of Parliament voted definitively on the state budget after a five-hour session. Using an original approach, the budgetary framework was adopted first, which set the main parameters for revenues and expenditures, limiting the possibility for subsequent corrections.

The deficit is planned at 7.2 billion euros, which represents 5.7% of GDP, although the European Commission projects lower levels of 4.2%.

Key parameters of the financial plan:

  • Revenues: nearly 50 billion euros.
  • Expenditures: 57 billion euros.
  • Economic indicators: 2.6% growth and 4.3% inflation.
  • New debt: the ceiling reaches almost 38 billion euros this year.

What changes for the citizens?

  • Social security contributions: From August 1, civil servants will cover 20% of their social security contributions (excluding the Security sector).
  • Vignettes: A 30% price increase starting August 1.
  • Excise duties: Price hikes for tobacco products.

Despite criticism from the opposition regarding the lack of funds for healthcare, education, and infrastructure, the ruling party promised serious reforms and more investments in the period leading up to 2027.
