Anastasia Kirilova, a forecaster at the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), has given BTA the forecast for November. Lows across Bulgaria will range from minus 7C to minus 2C, and highs from 20C to 25C.

On the Black Sea coast, lows will be between minus 5C and 2C.

Kirilova said the average temperature for the month will be near or below normal, while rainfall will be near or above normal. In northern Bulgaria and the Upper Thracian Plain, the average November temperature is usually 5C to 8C. It is 3C to 6C on the high plains, 8C to 10C on the Black Sea coast and in the Struma valley, and minus 5C to 3C in the mountains.

Normal rainfall is 40 to 70 litres per square metre in most of the country, and 60 to 90 litres in the south and the mountains.

The first ten days will be fairly cold, mostly cloudy and rainy. In the first days of the month, rain on the high plains and low mountain areas of western Bulgaria will mix with snow or turn to snow.

In the second ten days, it will be cooler than usual on most days. The sky will be mostly cloudy until the middle of this period, with precipitation, most often rain. After that, precipitation becomes less likely. Lowlands and valleys will be cloudy and foggy. In the mountains, the cloud will break up and thin out, and it will turn relatively warmer.

In the last ten days of the month, precipitation is unlikely and temperatures will be close to seasonal norms. Plains will be cloudy and foggy before noon, with sunny spells around midday and after. Mountains will be mostly sunny.

November is the month when autumn turns to winter. The ground cools sharply at night, cloudy and foggy days become more common, and calm autumn days become fewer. Weather systems are more active, Arctic air reaches the Balkan Peninsula more often, and snow often falls.

When warm air has pushed in from the Mediterranean, temperatures in November have reached 27C to 30C. People call these sunny, warm spells "Gypsy (poor man's) summer".

In Sofia at the start of the month, the sun rises at 7:00am and sets at 5:20pm, and the day lasts 10 hours 20 minutes. At the end of November, the sun rises at 7:36am and sets at 4:54pm, and the day lasts 9 hours 18 minutes.

The moon will be in its last quarter on 1 November. The new moon is on 9 November, the first quarter on 17 November and the full moon on 24 November.
