Flooding in Elenite: Inspections Reveal Violations

Sofia, Bulgaria " Serious omissions have been found during the inspections in the Elenite holiday village, which was damaged by floods after heavy rainfall. This was announced by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Ivan Ivanov, at a briefing today.

The Minister clarified that the inspections are continuing both documentarily and on site. Access to the affected village is limited, as law enforcement agencies still do not allow full access to the area. Tension is still felt at the scene of the tragedy. Employees are seen reviewing the damage, and residents gripped by anxiety are trying to cope with the consequences of the natural disaster.

The National Construction Control Directorate (DNCS) found that all construction activities in Elenite began in the period from 1997 to 2008. They were carried out on the basis of detailed urban plans. The responsibility for these activities lies with the local municipal administration. It was the municipal authorities who approved the detailed urban plans, the minister emphasized. He added that these approved plans allowed construction on a riverbed.

The Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) reminds that on October 3, Minister Ivanov ordered a series of inspections in connection with the crisis situations in some areas of the country caused by the heavy rainfall.

Teams from the "Road Infrastructure" Agency (API) and ViK have inspected the affected public infrastructure. At the same time, representatives of DNCS carried out checks for compliance with building codes in the affected areas.
