Flooding in Elenite: Damage assessment begins today

Today, a large-scale assessment of the damage caused by the devastating flood in the resort of "Elenite" is expected to begin. The disaster, which struck the area, claimed the lives of three people and left behind a scene of destruction and chaos. Throughout the night, on-site teams remained on duty, battling the consequences of the disaster. Over 100 residents and tourists were evacuated from the affected areas, seeking refuge from the encroaching waters.

Unusually large amounts of rainfall, exceeding 230 liters per square meter in a short time, caused the formation of two tidal waves. These masses of water flooded hotels and buildings, turning the resort into a scene of chaos. Rescue teams continued to work to ensure the safety of everyone.

The flood in "Elenite" swept everything in its path. The picture of destruction was striking. Cars, houses, hotels, and dozens of vehicles were dragged by the disaster towards the sea. People found themselves trapped on the upper floors of buildings. Some of them found salvation by moving to the upper floors. Subsequently, they were evacuated with specialized vehicles and with the help of the army, police, and gendarmerie, who joined the rescue operation.

The mayor of Sveti Vlas, Ivan Nikolov, gave details about the situation to BNT. "There were on-duty teams on the ground all evening. They were evacuating injured people until late. The last injured arrived in Sveti Vlas around 2:00 in the morning," he said. The work of the rescue teams continued throughout the night to provide assistance to the victims.

According to the mayor, the cause of the disaster lies in the deep ravine located near the resort. It is still early to talk about the exact amount of damage, but it is expected to reach tens of millions. Numerous hotels, houses, and shops are affected. The mayor explained that despite the prior cleaning of the ravines in the area, which are known to receive large amounts of water, the disaster in "Elenite" was the result of an unprecedented amount of rainfall. "There was really no damage there. But what happened in Elenite is a lot of water and there was nowhere to break through," he stated, describing the severity of the situation.

It remains to be determined whether there was unauthorized construction in the area. The buildings near the ravine were built more than 20 years ago, which raises questions about their resilience to such natural disasters.
