National Program for the Digitalization of Community Centers and Libraries

SOFIA – The Ministry of Labor and Social Policy has announced the start of a new, ambitious program aimed at revitalizing community centers (chitalishta) and libraries across the country. The initiative, with a budget of 60 million leva, was presented at a briefing at the Council of Ministers by the Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Borislav Gutsanov. It is a key part of the government's efforts to promote digital equality, especially in smaller populated areas.

760 new digital clubs will be created

According to the minister, the program will provide funding for the creation of 760 new digital clubs. They will be opened specifically in community centers and libraries, which traditionally serve as cultural hubs in rural areas and small towns. The goal is to breathe new life into these emblematic institutions by turning them into modern, technologically equipped centers, accessible to all members of the community.

"We are revitalizing the community centers. This is something of key importance for the community in these small populated areas. We are breathing new life into the community centers and libraries, which will have the opportunity to apply for these projects free of charge", said Minister Gutsanov.

The minister added that every community center or library that wishes to participate will be able to apply for a grant of up to 53 thousand leva. These funds can be used for major renovations of the premises, the purchase of new computers, as well as other necessary equipment that will facilitate the local population's access to digital services and resources.

The program is already open for applications, and according to the minister, the first applications have already been submitted. The goal is not just to provide technology, but to create active community centers that will reduce the digital divide between large cities and smaller populated areas. The initiative is seen as an important step toward preserving Bulgarian culture while making it relevant and accessible in the modern digital world.
