Ministers Boyko Mitov and Yanis Voridis held a bilateral meeting, where they discussed key aspects of the EU agenda in the field of migration and asylum. Particular attention was paid to the need to create a unified European system for the return of illegally residing migrants, without which the other measures to combat illegal migration would be ineffective. The importance of a clear message to the citizens of third countries that human trafficking is a criminal activity, and economic migration is not a right but a privilege, determined by the legislation of the host country, was emphasized.
Minister Mitov highly appreciated the joint efforts to guard the external borders of the EU, which guarantee the security and freedom of movement within the Schengen area. In turn, Minister Voridis presented legislative changes being discussed in Greece, aimed at encouraging the voluntary return of migrants. He also focused on the fight against corruption, expressing readiness to share the experience of the Greek authorities in this area with the Bulgarian side.
The two ministers agreed to hold regular meetings before the meetings of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, in order to develop common positions and messages on issues related to the management of migration in the EU.
